What are braces?
At their core, braces are tiny clasps that are securely attached to the surface of the tooth. To install braces, orthodontists use a special material that releases fluoride, thereby protecting the enamel from demineralization.
Depending on what types of braces are chosen, a patient's smile can look completely different. Some people choose the classic metal option, others agree to have their teeth corrected only on one condition – if the braces are completely invisible to others. In any case, braces themselves are not a means of correcting dentition. They are only part of a complex device called a “bracket system”.
What does a braces system consist of?
Its main element is the arch, which has the shape of a regular dentition. It is she who moves the teeth to the desired position, constantly influencing them. The arc can be made of various alloys and have a round, square or rectangular cross-section. During the treatment process, the orthodontist replaces the arches at least 5-7 times, gradually moving from thin to more rigid.
In addition to the arch and braces, the system design includes:
- Ligatures
. Metal or elastic, they firmly fix the arch in braces. Ligatures most often wear out and are therefore replaced during the treatment process.
- Orthodontic locks or rings
. These are interchangeable elements that are selected by the dentist depending on the clinical situation. Locks and rings are installed on the 6th and 7th teeth, and provide support for the arch.
- Elastics
. They are rings made of elastic material, which, if the doctor’s instructions are followed conscientiously, allow the patient to correct an incorrect bite. The patient puts them on independently, securing them between the lock and the wings of the brace. Since elastics quickly lose their properties and tear, they need to be changed 2 times a day.
- Hooks
. This is an additional structural element of an orthodontic lock, ring or bracket that allows the elastics to engage.
When installing the system, the doctor attaches braces to each tooth. An orthodontic arch is inserted into their grooves, which is fixed with ligatures or closed with a special lid, if it is provided for by the design of the bracket. Rings and cheek locks are used to secure the entire structure. The latter can be attached directly to the tooth enamel, just like braces. Or they can be welded to rings covering the tooth and secured with cement. But sometimes this is not enough. And numerous auxiliary elements are used: chains, elastic bands, springs.
