    Orthodontics

    What are braces?

    At their core, braces are tiny clasps that are securely attached to the surface of the tooth. To install braces, orthodontists use a special material that releases fluoride, thereby protecting the enamel from demineralization.

    Depending on what types of braces are chosen, a patient's smile can look completely different. Some people choose the classic metal option, others agree to have their teeth corrected only on one condition – if the braces are completely invisible to others. In any case, braces themselves are not a means of correcting dentition. They are only part of a complex device called a “bracket system”.

    What does a braces system consist of?

    Its main element is the arch, which has the shape of a regular dentition. It is she who moves the teeth to the desired position, constantly influencing them. The arc can be made of various alloys and have a round, square or rectangular cross-section. During the treatment process, the orthodontist replaces the arches at least 5-7 times, gradually moving from thin to more rigid.

    In addition to the arch and braces, the system design includes:

    1. Ligatures

      . Metal or elastic, they firmly fix the arch in braces. Ligatures most often wear out and are therefore replaced during the treatment process.

    2. Orthodontic locks or rings

      . These are interchangeable elements that are selected by the dentist depending on the clinical situation. Locks and rings are installed on the 6th and 7th teeth, and provide support for the arch.

    3. Elastics

      . They are rings made of elastic material, which, if the doctor’s instructions are followed conscientiously, allow the patient to correct an incorrect bite. The patient puts them on independently, securing them between the lock and the wings of the brace. Since elastics quickly lose their properties and tear, they need to be changed 2 times a day.

    4. Hooks

      . This is an additional structural element of an orthodontic lock, ring or bracket that allows the elastics to engage.

    When installing the system, the doctor attaches braces to each tooth. An orthodontic arch is inserted into their grooves, which is fixed with ligatures or closed with a special lid, if it is provided for by the design of the bracket. Rings and cheek locks are used to secure the entire structure. The latter can be attached directly to the tooth enamel, just like braces. Or they can be welded to rings covering the tooth and secured with cement. But sometimes this is not enough. And numerous auxiliary elements are used: chains, elastic bands, springs.

    Fresh questions about the braces service in Yaroslavl

    Installation of braces in Yaroslavl

    Most people have varying degrees of bite problems that appeared in childhood - to correct the bite, the doctor resorts to installing braces that can solve various problems of the dental system.

    It is recommended to correct an incorrect bite when it is already fully formed - at the age of 11-13 years, when the formation of the bite is particularly strong. Excessively early installation of braces can contribute to the resorption of not yet formed tooth roots and their loss in the future, but it all depends on the speed of formation of the jaw apparatus.

    Braces can be installed at any age, so if you are no longer 13 years old, don’t worry; adults have no age restrictions. The only significant difference is that the treatment process will take longer than in children, but the result will please you with straight and beautiful teeth.

    Installation of braces is carried out in several stages:

    1. Diagnostics . During this stage, the orthodontist prepares a treatment plan and selects a brace system. The doctor will take a series of photographs of the dentition from different angles and refer you to X-rays or CT scans.
    2. Treatment plan. The orthodontist draws up an optimal treatment plan, taking into account the analysis of all the material and calculations. Next, the doctor offers the patient the most suitable brace system option, which must be agreed upon.
    3. Sanitation and professional oral hygiene. Sanitation means the treatment of all existing dental problems (caries, pulpitis, periodontitis) and the replacement of old fillings. After sanitation, a professional hygienic cleaning procedure for plaque and stone is carried out, as well as familiarizing the patient with all the intricacies of caring for the brace system.
    4. Indirect fixation of the bracket system. The indirect fixation method is the most progressive method of installing braces today - the doctor studies all photographs and images in advance, draws the teeth on a model of the dentition, taking into account the placement of all axes, placing each bracket in the most correct position. This method not only guarantees the most accurate installation of the system, but also saves the patient’s time: complex fastening of braces is 2-3 times faster than individual braces and takes about 1 hour per jaw.

    The production of individual braces takes on average from one to two months, based on a 3D model of the jaw created from an orthopantomogram and CT scan. After an exhaustive analysis by a special program of the location of each tooth and the presence of bite problems, the manufacturing company creates an arch and brackets, which are then transferred to the dental clinic.

    Possible options for correcting the bite

    The orthodontist at our Clinic selects the treatment method individually, taking into account the age, condition of the patient’s oral cavity and diagnostic data (radiovisiography, orthopantomogram). For early and late shifting malocclusions, the following structures are used :

    Removable

    • plates;
    • functional systems;
    • trainers.

    Fixed

    • partial braces;
    • devices that expand the jaw.

    We offer standard bite correction systems or manufacture custom ones tailored to the characteristics of a particular patient. Early orthodontic treatment forms the correct bite and promotes the healthy development of the maxillofacial complex. If conservative treatments do not give the desired result, our specialists use surgical techniques.

    Fixed braces systems

    orthodontic devices of several types are most often used :

    • Metal braces. A mixture of medical steel, gold, nickel, titanium. Reduce the period of bite correction by reducing friction between the groove and the arch.
    • Ceramic opaque braces. Polycrystalline aluminum oxide. Resistant to color change. Ideal for correcting yellowish teeth.
    • Ceramic sapphire braces. Monocrystalline aluminum oxide. Thanks to transparency, they are invisible on the teeth. They have rounded contours that reduce trauma. Suitable even for light enamel.

    Bite correction using braces includes an active correction phase and a retention period. It is necessary to consolidate the results obtained and prevent the teeth from returning to the wrong position. Such orthodontic treatment can last several years. During this time, the patient should periodically visit the orthodontist and follow medical recommendations on nutrition and oral hygiene. When straightening your teeth by wearing fixed appliances, proper brushing technique is important.

    According to the method of fastening, bracket systems are divided into:

    1. ligatures, which are based on wire and rubber rings;
    2. non-ligature, attached with snap locks.

    Ligature-free systems are more convenient; they can be used even if there is not enough free space without removing teeth.

    Other fixed structures

    Less often than braces, orthodontists use other fixed devices :

    • A palatal expander is a wire with the ends attached to the teeth and an expanding part in the middle. Purpose of application: jaw expansion, achieved in 3-8 weeks
    • The palatal arch is made of very thin wire in the shape of a rocker with rings at the ends for fastening. Purpose of application: displacement of teeth in a certain direction
    • The Herbst apparatus consists of two hinges that are attached to both jaws. Purpose of application: correction of distal bite

    Removable structures for correcting bites

    Patients of our Clinic have access to a method of correcting malocclusion using aligners - transparent aligners that are comfortable to wear and highly aesthetic. They are made individually for each patient (adult or teenager after a complete change of teeth).

    Comparison of aligners with fixed structures

    Fixed braces

    • look unaesthetic;
    • cannot be removed;
    • painful to wear;
    • scratch tooth enamel;
    • require complex hygiene;
    • increase the risk of developing caries;
    • can injure gums and oral cavity;
    • impair sound pronunciation;
    • require dietary restrictions.

    Removable mouth guards

    • invisible to others;
    • can be removed;
    • do not cause pain;
    • safe for tooth enamel;
    • easy to care for;
    • do not contribute to the development of caries;
    • do not injure the soft tissues of the oral cavity;
    • do not affect the quality of speech;
    • allow normal nutrition.

    Aligners have a number of advantages over all types of fixed systems:

    1. Aesthetics . Transparent mouth guards are invisible to others and do not spoil your appearance;
    2. Wearing comfort . Getting used to it takes 2-3 days, it does not scratch anything, does not cause pain, does not interfere with speech, if necessary, the aligners can be removed for an important event;
    3. Hygiene . There are no food particles left in the mouth guard, no unpleasant odor, no risk of caries, and you can brush your teeth with a regular brush;
    4. Safety . Modern aligner materials do not damage tooth enamel and soft tissues in the mouth.

    The most important advantage of orthodontic treatment with removable aligners in our Clinic is the predictability of the result. Using computer technology, we carry out 3D modeling of the dentition and determine the exact timing of treatment, which, depending on the complexity of the case, takes from 3 to 18 months. To achieve the expected result as quickly as possible, the aligners must be worn most of the day and changed regularly as defects are corrected.
