The condition of the oral mucosa is one of the indicators of human health. It is involved in most pathological processes occurring in the body and reacts even to minor changes in the microbial composition of the oral cavity. Therefore, many people have experienced red dots on their gums and palate at least once in their lives. This is a natural reaction to mechanical and temperature stimuli. Redness may be caused by:
- consumption of hot and spicy foods and drinks;
- damage to soft tissues with a hard brush, toothpick, bones and pieces of hard food;
- Using the wrong toothpaste or mouthwash;
- wearing prostheses, braces, retention caps.
However, red spots can also indicate various diseases. Let's look at the most common cases.
What causes red dots in the sky?
Experts identify several factors that contribute to the appearance of red dots on the palate in a child or adult:
- Pathological processes in the circulatory system and vessels.
- Infectious diseases.
- Allergic reaction.
- Rare diseases.
Based on the causes and individual characteristics of the body, a red rash can appear either once in a lifetime or quite often. If spots appear repeatedly, then we can talk about herpes viruses, thrush or enteroviral infections.
When exposed to infection, in addition to red dots on the palate, the child’s temperature rises, pain in the throat and larynx appears, weakness, and it becomes painful to swallow. The rash affects not only the palate, but also the tongue, as well as the inside of the cheeks. Infections that cause a rash include:
- Flu.
- Roseola.
- Scarlet fever.
- Meningitis.
- Typhus.
- Rubella.
- Staphylococcal infections.
- Chickenpox.
- Mononucleosis.
- Erythema.
- Syphilis.
Children suffer from chickenpox, rubella and scarlet fever in a milder form than adults, receiving immunity for life. In adults, these diseases occur with complications. But coping with herpes sore throat and stomatitis is much more difficult for children. These diseases progress quickly and greatly worsen the child’s condition.
Treatment of herpes sore throat in children
There is no specific antiviral treatment. Treatment of the cause of herpetic disease should be carried out according to the following scheme:
- isolation of the patient
- drinking plenty of fluids, bed rest
- actions aimed at relieving and alleviating symptoms.
At the moment, no drug has yet been invented that can kill the causative agent of the disease. You can only alleviate or remove the symptoms. A person recovers completely only when the body develops immunity to the virus. Usually the body takes a week to do this.
First of all, it is advisable to isolate the child from other family members - separate dishes, linen and towels - the disease is contagious. For herpetic sore throat, children are prescribed antihistamines to relieve swelling and irritation. "Claritin", "Suprastin" and others are suitable. To reduce the temperature, use antipyretics: Nurofen, Efferalgan, Paracetamol, etc. To relieve pain in the throat, gargle with decoctions of sage, chamomile, calendula, salt or soda solution. Rinsing should be done every hour. You can use special sprays and aerosols: Hexoral, Ingalipt, Tantum-Verde. Tablets and lozenges relieve pain. It is advisable to use the antiseptic agents Miramistin and Chlorhexidine.
For successful recovery it is necessary to create favorable conditions for the child. It is necessary to provide conditions for sleeping in a well and frequently ventilated room. The diet should consist of soups, purees, and cereals. Food should not be hot so as not to irritate a sore throat. Don't forget about drinking plenty of warm drinks. The patient can be given rosehip decoction, tea with jam or honey.
Note to parents! In case of herpes sore throat, do not inhale, warm up or apply compresses under any circumstances. Such measures will only activate viruses, and the disease will drag on.
Some parents mistakenly lubricate the bubbles in the larynx with iodine or brilliant green. This measure is absolutely ineffective, does not bring any practical benefit, but causes severe pain to the baby.
There is no need to give your child antiherpetic drugs such as Acyclovir and its analogues. As we have already mentioned, the course of the disease has nothing to do with the herpes virus.
Herpetic stomatitis
With stomatitis, spots in the throat range from light pink to red. Areas with the rash may merge or be located far from each other. There are several types of stomatitis, among which herpetic stomatitis is especially common.
This disease is accompanied by headache, high fever, and red dots form on the upper palate, tongue, lips, and cheeks. These points turn into bubbles and explode to form red erosions. The herpes virus remains in the body for life. With strong immunity, it is in an inactive phase, and will manifest itself in the following cases:
- With exacerbation of chronic inflammatory processes.
- After a course of corticosteroids.
- In case of trauma to the mucous membrane.
- During emotional turmoil, allergies, vitamin deficiency.
- When the immune system is weakened.
Treatment of herpetic stomatitis should be prescribed by a qualified dentist.

Angina
Herpetic sore throat is also a fairly common cause of the formation of red dots in the throat on the roof of the mouth. The disease is characterized by high fever that lasts for several days, pain when swallowing, discomfort in the abdomen, and enlarged lymph nodes.
Streptococcal sore throat is accompanied by general malaise, headache, and high body temperature. The tonsils become loose and covered with plaque. In this case, antibiotic therapy is used, but the treatment regimen must be drawn up by a qualified specialist.
What causes the appearance of rashes
- viruses that cause diseases of the upper respiratory tract;
- influenza virus;
- Epstein-Barr virus (causative agent of mononucleosis);
- adenovirus;
- enterovirus HSV - 1 (virus that causes herpetic sore throat).
If infected with any of these viruses, the ciliated epithelium lining the upper respiratory tract is affected.
Of the bacterial microorganisms that can cause the symptom of “red throat,” the most common is streptococcus A (GAS). This is practically the only bacterium that can infect the throat. This is what causes streptococcal sore throat.

Other reasons for finding red dots in the sky
Red dots on the upper palate may be the result of the following rare diseases:
Pyogenic granuloma
Occurs in a place often subject to trauma. It is necessary to excise the tumors at the root, after which electrocoagulation therapy is prescribed.
Kaposi's sarcoma
It is a malignant neoplasm with a purple hue. Local chemotherapy is prescribed, and measures are taken to increase the patient’s immunity.
Pathechia in the sky
These are small flat spots that often appear during mononucleosis. May be a manifestation of smallpox, thrombocytopenia, typhoid fever and endocarditis.
If a red rash occurs in the mouth, you do not need to make a diagnosis and prescribe treatment yourself.
It is necessary to consult with a specialist, find out the cause of the spots and receive appropriate treatment. The DentalGuru dental clinic employs experienced and professional dentists who guarantee painless and effective treatment of stomatitis and other dental diseases. Possible reasons
- Mycoses. Most often, red dots in the mouth are symptoms of oral candidiasis. Fungi of the genus Candida are considered opportunistic. They live in the intestines and do not cause harm to the body. However, when they enter the oral cavity, they quickly multiply and provoke inflammation of the mucous membrane. Spots of different shades of red can form on the gums, palate, cheeks, tongue, and tonsils.
- Bacterial infections. One of the main pathogens is streptococci. They change the structure of the mucous membrane and lead to inflammation of the soft tissues. They provoke the development of pharyngitis and tonsillitis.
- Viral diseases. Acute respiratory viral infections can also be accompanied by the formation of red spots on the oral mucosa. Pathogens enter the oral cavity through the nose. The gums and palate become inflamed, local hyperemia appears. If the spots become covered with a white coating, we can talk about a fungal or bacterial infection.
- Neoplasms. Suspicious spots on the gums may turn out to be benign tumors. The most common include papillomas and granulomas. Also, the risk of malignant neoplasms cannot be excluded.
Allergic reaction as a cause of rash without fever
The pathological reaction of the immune system is the result of exposure to external factors. The causes of an allergic reaction may be:
- rinses, toothpastes of bright color, with a pungent odor and taste;
- low-quality filling material or dental structures - braces, veneers;
- certain foods: citrus fruits, honey, nuts;
- low quality plastic toys that a small child puts in his mouth.
The allergic reaction occurs without fever. Rashes are observed not only on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, but also on the skin. A typical symptom is severe itching of the skin.
Treatment includes antiallergic drugs; local dosage forms are prescribed only in severe cases. These can be hormonal ointments that reduce itching and reduce redness on the skin. The main task is to eliminate contact with the allergen and prevent its re-entry.
How to treat childhood stomatitis
Once the diagnosis has been made, treatment for stomatitis should begin as soon as possible. It is necessary to keep in mind that prescribing medications yourself: the decision can only be made by a pediatrician who has information about how this or that medicine can further affect the well-being of a small patient. First of all, the doctor must prescribe a scraping to determine the type of causative agent of the disease, and a virological study: depending on this, the type of treatment is prescribed.
The duration of treatment is influenced by the advanced stage of the disease and the type of stomatitis: on average, it is possible to overcome the disease within a week, provided that the doctor’s recommendations are fully followed.
Children's stomatitis: treatment with medications
Doctors prescribe symptomatic medications, the purpose of which is to get rid of the symptoms that accompany the development of the disease.
Appointed:
- vitamin complexes to strengthen the child’s immunity as a whole;
- antiviral drugs;
- antipyretic drugs;
- gels and ointments for treating the oral cavity.
In addition, it is recommended to drink plenty of fluids and eat a diet that excludes the consumption of spicy, sour and highly salty foods.
The most commonly prescribed drugs for stomatitis are:
- Miramistin. An antifungal solution that prevents wound infection. The drug starts the process of regeneration of damaged tissues.
- Vinilin is an anesthetic with a healing effect. The medicine forms a protective film on the surface of the ulcers, protecting them from irritation when eating food, as a result of which the healing process is accelerated.
- Nystatin is an effective treatment for candidal stomatitis.
- Metrogyl Denta is an antibacterial drug applied twice a day to damaged areas of the mucous membrane.
- Acyclovir is an antiviral drug that prevents new lesions of the rash from appearing. The drug is applied up to 6 times during the day. Thanks to its use, the formation of crusts is accelerated.
Children's stomatitis: treatment with folk remedies
Many parents, in addition to or even instead of medications, prefer to use traditional medicine. As mentioned above, you should not do this without the consent of your doctor, however, you cannot fail to mention these methods of treatment.
So, among these funds it is worth highlighting:
- soda-salt solution. An equal amount of soda and salt are dissolved in a glass of water (about half a teaspoon of each component). It is recommended to rinse your mouth with the resulting solution 4 times a day after meals;
- infusion of chamomile with honey. For the solution, take a glass of boiling water and a tablespoon of chamomile. When the liquid cools, add 2 teaspoons of honey. The product is used for rinsing 3 times a day;
- brilliant green is the most affordable remedy available for sale in any pharmacy. It dries out wounds and prevents new foci of disease from forming.

Diagnostics
A patient suspected of having this disease is examined by a dentist. He asks the child’s parents about how the disease progressed. The diagnosis is established on the basis of the characteristic clinical picture of stomatitis, revealed during examination, anamnesis and characteristic complaints. Upon examination, typical mucosal lesions are revealed.
To confirm the diagnosis, laboratory testing of scrapings of the oral mucosa, the contents of ulcers, the patient’s saliva and blood is used.
The following are used for research:
- cytopolymerase chain reaction;
- immunofluorescence method;
- serological blood tests (RSC, ELISA, immunoglobulin M test);
- HSV test for the detection of immunodot G-specific glycoprotein.
These methods are used only for severe infections, as they are quite expensive.
Prevention
Preventive measures are aimed at preventing infection. This presents certain difficulties, since the vast majority of the population is infected with it. It is better if the child gets sick from it at an older age.
For this it is recommended:
- avoid contact with infected people;
- will provide personal utensils and personal hygiene products for the child;
- Kissing people with herpetic rashes is prohibited;
- strengthening the baby's immune system.
It is recommended that the child be provided with adequate nutrition and regularly given vitamin and mineral complexes.
Common diseases
Once harmful microorganisms enter the body, they begin to actively multiply and release waste products that can destroy tissue. When they enter the pharynx, they attach to the tissues of the ciliated epithelium - practically destroying it. For this reason, small hemorrhages may form that resemble red dots on the throat.
There are also common viral diseases that often occur in both children and adults. In frequent cases, they become the causes of a rash in the throat. So, with the development of herpetic sore throat, viral pemphigus, allergies, herpetic pharyngitis, spots appear in the larynx. You should know that only a qualified specialist, after a thorough examination of the patient, is able to make an accurate diagnosis. Based on the diagnostic results obtained, the doctor will prescribe effective therapy that will help get rid of the disease. Self-medication can be harmful and cause the development of serious health complications.
